Andrew Bertell
How I work:
I'm a licensed clinical social worker and psychoanalytic psychotherapist, in practice for over 15 years. Licensed in Oregon, Maryland and New York. In person in Ashland, Oregon, and by video elsewhere. People come to me with anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, relationship difficulty, and the harder transitions of a life, though we rarely stay at the level of the label for long.
My training is psychoanalytic - relational, modern, contemporary - but in practice I'm more interested in you than in applying any of it to you. Together we explore what matters, what repeats, what gets avoided, what happens between us. You come to know what's best. That stays with you everywhere.
I also work as a thought partner. Some people come to me not for conventional therapy but for sustained, confidential attention to something they're working through: a decision, a project, a difficult question, a piece of writing, a leadership puzzle. The structure is different; the kind of attention to complexity is the same. Some call this coaching. I think of it as the same depth of attention, pointed
at something distinct you're working at.
Who I am
Trained at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies and the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis, with additional study in somatic and contemplative approaches. Outside the office, I serve on the board of the Ashland Independent Film Festival.
