Many of the students I work best with are used to being the one others rely on. You might be juggling school, friendships, family expectations, and future plans—while quietly feeling unsure of what you actually need or want. You may find yourself overthinking, second-guessing, or going along with things just to keep the peace. It can feel hard to set boundaries, speak up, or trust your own decisions. Even if things look “fine” on the outside, you might feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or not fully like yourself. With the many transitions that life brings can come many challenges. Hello! My name is Dr. Ashly Lawrence. I have been working with college students and young adults for almost twenty years. College is a time of self-exploration, transition, and identity development. It can also bring great stress, existential questions, and family of origin issues. I am here to support it all. I practice from a relational feminist lens and am best suited to support clients struggling with stress, anxiety, identity development, trauma, family of origin issues, relationship stressors, and life transitions. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and often work with folx with one or more marginalized identities.
Whether you have specific goals in therapy, or are simply struggling to keep your head above water, therapy can be a space to slow down and allow yourself the opportunity to sit with your experiences and feelings. I love working with queer and trans folks, people exploring their gender and sexuality for the first time, as well as people with Autism and ADHD, and people who are exploring the possibility that they may be neurodivergent. I also enjoy working with people with complex trauma histories, religious trauma, complicated family dynamics, as well as people struggling with anxiety and mood disorders. I am dedicated to working with clients to identify and process what is keeping them “stuck,” so clients can create for themselves a healthier future. I believe that harnessing creativity within the process of therapy can be extremely beneficial, especially for clients who have a more difficult time verbally expressing their thoughts and feelings. As a nonbinary and neurodivergent person, I know how important it is to find a therapist who shares your identities. I generally tend to be laid-back and very relational as a therapist and enjoy using humor to build rapport. I practice from a harm reduction holistic theoretical orientation. It combines person-centered (respect for autonomy) with CBT/systemic therapy (a critical look at culture and attachments). I assist clients in adjusting to unexpected life transitions by constructing healthier boundaries with themselves and others to balance their lifestyles. I have worked in social services with very diverse client populations for over 20 years, which has greatly influenced my practice. I have experience helping people deal with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, grief and loss, mental illness, relationship issues and general life stressors. I also truly enjoy working with individuals on the autism spectrum and other developmental disabilities. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Sussex and a Masters degree in Counseling from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.
