My passion for psychiatry began during my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, where I graduated with a degree in neuroscience and a GPA of 3.9. Due to my academic excellence, I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, America’s oldest honor society, which includes 17 former U.S. Presidents and 40 Supreme Court Justices among its members. Before pursuing a career in medicine, I taught Algebra to middle school students in New York City as a public school educator. I was initially hired to help students pass their state exams, and to my surprise, they succeeded. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of education. At Rush University, I hold three administrative roles: Executive Chief Resident, Education Chief, and Internal Moonlighting Coordinator. As Executive Chief Resident, I organize two literature review series: Rush’s Journal Club and a program called “Controversies in Psychopharmacology,” which explores new and controversial topics in psychiatry. Together with faculty, I also coordinate the PRITE exam review series. As an enthusiastic test-taker, I achieved scores above the 90th percentile in neuroscience on the 2020 and 2021 exams. Additionally, I oversee the Balint group, a support group aimed at addressing physician burnout and promoting wellness among residents. In my role as Education Chief, I manage Rush’s Teaching Clinic, designed to support medical students. I regularly lecture to both medical students and residents. I have collaborated with my co-residents to create a personalized tutoring series for at-risk medical students focused on helping them pass their NBME shelf exams; I’m proud to report that 100% of my mentees have successfully passed. Furthermore, I co-lead a neuroscience curriculum aligned with materials from the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative (NNCI) and deliver lectures to my co-residents. As the Internal Moonlighting Coordinator at Rush, I ensure continuous and effective psychiatric care in the emergency department. I have logged over 1,000 hours in the emergency room, gaining experience in stabilizing high-acuity situations such as psychosis, mania, and agitation. This role has also provided me with valuable experience in accounting and bookkeeping, allowing me to work closely with the payroll department. I am actively involved in the Illinois Psychiatric Society, the Illinois branch of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). I serve on several committees, including the anti-racism committee and the government affairs committee. My interests lie in interventional psychiatry, and I currently work at Rush’s TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) and ketamine clinic. In October, I collaborated with IV Chicago Solutions and shadowed Dr. Eugene Lipov, a pioneer of the stellate ganglion block procedure for treating PTSD. Hi, I’m April! I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois and work with clients statewide via telehealth. Often the clients I see are adults that are working through life transition concerns, anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, depression, relationship concerns, grief, and work stress. I have experience working with a wide range of populations and in therapeutic settings treating a variety of mental health concerns. I would describe my communication style as welcoming, calm, and encouraging. I focus on creating a safe, non-judgmental, and empowering space for clients to share their experiences and thoughts in session. I want my clients to feel comfortable being their authentic selves as I believe this is an important element of our work together. Sessions often look like a collaborative effort to assist clients with their goals. I work alongside clients to identify goals that they believe are the most important for them to achieve during our time together. This starts with us building trust and rapport with one another in our sessions so that we can create a strong team environment to assist with goal achievement. I also pride myself on being flexible as I understand goals can shift as clients begin exploring other areas of their lives in session. Please visit my website for additional information on session cost, accepted insurance plans or to schedule a therapy appointment.

When it comes to supporting you and providing you, your care must be adaptable, empathetic, individualized. Whether you are seeking dramatic change, collaboration on a major life decision, or just in need of someone to discuss the trials and tribulations of life, it is important that therapy reflects your uniqueness through its uniqueness. I have experience across a diverse array of clients with a strong belief that care should promote equity, unconditional positive regard, and identity affirming care. I have experience working with clients seeking help for depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, gender affirming care, pro LGBTQIA+ care, and general life stressors in young adults and adults ages 18-35. I am also a firm believer in the power of remote therapy, if you are going to be vulnerable you should at least be able to choose where you are vulnerable. What should a new client know about working with you? I believe that care should be individualized and adaptive. Open communication is crucial as it helps me adapt to what your needs are and makes for better collaboration on care. I am a firm believer that therapy must also address what is happening in society, and strongly believe in recognizing how systemic issues may influence life’s struggles. My therapy is inclusive and an LGTBTQIA+ safe space. What is your typical process for working with clients? Therapy is a dialogue, I will not just be a bystander who listens, I ask you to challenge your negative beliefs and reflect on statements that you may not even realize you are saying. We will work together to understand how your thoughts, feelings, and past affect each other and influence your behaviors and beliefs. Typically I achieve this through motivational interviewing, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, psycho education, and a systems focused outlook.

Your mind is unique—your therapy should be too. If you’re exhausted by overthinking, caught in endless “what if” thoughts, or feeling mentally drained despite appearing to have it all together, you’re not alone. Many of my clients are thoughtful, compassionate, and high-achieving people struggling with anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, intrusive thoughts, self-doubt, burnout, depression, or major life transitions. Together, we’ll uncover what’s keeping you stuck and build the skills needed to create meaningful, lasting change. My approach goes beyond symptom management. I take a personalized, whole-person approach that combines neuroscience, comprehensive assessment, and evidence-based therapies tailored to your unique needs. Drawing from Neuropsychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT) for OCD, Solution-Focused Therapy, mindfulness, and somatic techniques, we’ll help your brain and body work together—not against each other. Therapy with me is collaborative, practical, and grounded in real life. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how your mind works, learn effective tools to manage difficult emotions, and build resilience that lasts beyond the therapy room. I believe healing doesn’t have to be cold or clinical—it happens through authentic connection, curiosity, and, when appropriate, a little humor. Whether you’re ready to quiet the mental noise, overcome anxiety, regain confidence, or simply feel like yourself again, you don’t have to do it alone. I offer personalized therapy in both English and Polish through in-person and secure online sessions. Healing is possible, and I’d be honored to be part of your journey. This version is more conversational, premium, and client-focused while naturally incorporating your specialties and approach without feeling like a list of techniques.
Before coming to the US, I graduated from the top medical school in China and have a background in internal medicine. After 10 years of practicing in the field of medicine, I had the opportunity to train as a psychiatrist at University of Tennessee and became a board certified general psychiatrist. My training in the field of internal medicine has helped my psychiatry practice, especially in the care of the geriatric patients, who often have chronic medical conditions. I am very conscious of the side effects of the medications commonly used in the treatment of mental illness, some which may affect a patient's physical health. I have been practicing psychiatry for about 12 years in the Chicagoland area, treating a diverse population of patients. My approach includes listening to a patient's story and concerns, evaluating patients’ cultural, social, mental and physical status, their support system, and treating the patient as a whole person. I then generate a treatment plan that can include psychotherapy and other supportive therapy, not only the prescription of medication. I speak Mandarin fluently and can support patients with that language need. Schedule your session easily through our online booking link. Click "Website" to find a time that works for you.
I like to think of therapy as a journey of inner exploration and I am along as a guide. I believe that therapy is most effective when it is a combination of intellectual understanding and emotional experience. In that regard, it feels like your feelings are our road signs that we are in the right track to self-growth. I try to not have a specific agenda going into sessions, but rather to go where it is you feel like you need to go at that time. I believe that it is my role to create a safe space for you to express and explore whatever it is that is inside you. Compassion is key, and cultivating self-compassion is one of the most important elements of therapy. I look forward to helping you explore and become more self-aware and self-compassionate!
Hello. I'm Dr. LaShara Shaw. I believe that we have basic needs. We have needs for personal power, freedom, fun, survival, and secure connections (a choice-theory perspective). Sometimes these needs are not met or we have difficulty attending to them. I think it is crucial to reflect upon what matters in your life and what you consider your responsibility to achieve a flourishing life. Sometimes thoughts, insecurities, and behaviors can be taught, and they do not serve us in the best capacity. In those instances, I believe that humans are capable of learning new things. There is power and brevity in recognizing choices, and there is autonomy to choose how to engage with those circumstances through the collaborative process. I often work with students navigating big changes—adjusting to college life, managing stress, or figuring out who they are and where they fit in. Maybe you’re balancing school with work or family expectations, or feeling pressure to succeed while silently struggling. I offer a supportive, judgment-free space where you can slow down, talk things through, and learn to care for yourself while meeting life’s demands. Together, we can work on easing anxiety, building confidence, and finding balance that feels sustainable.

Whether you are adjusting to independence, managing the academic and social pressures of campus life, or beginning to explore family planning and your future, I am here to help. I also specialize in neurodiversity, helping students—including those who are late-diagnosed—understand their unique brain wiring and develop strategies that actually work for them. My goal is to help you build a life that feels authentic to who you are, while giving you the tools to navigate the challenges that come with this pivotal stage of life.
