Therapists for college students near 02141
With over ten years of clinical experience, I recognize how academic stress can affect young adults. These challenges often impact individuals uniquely, depending on their backgrounds and identities. In therapy, I customize my approach to equip you with the tools and support necessary to reclaim balance and focus on your academic and social pursuits. Together, we will create a space to address these challenges.
I know how easy it is to fall into the trap of believing you need to ‘fix’ yourself in order to be happy. My goal is to help you break free from self-judgment and step into a healthier, more balanced version of yourself. We’ll work together to understand all aspects of who you are, using a holistic approach that acknowledges both your struggles and your strengths.

I hold a B. A. in English from Shanghai University and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. Over the last 19 years, I interned and practiced at various inpatient and outpatient settings, including Mt. Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, Mt. Sinai-Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC, Amherst College Counseling Center in Amherst, MA, and the Community Health Center of Franklin County in Greenfield, MA. My own cross-cultural and cross-lingual experiences continue to shape the way I work. My “ideal patient” often shares these essential characteristics with me: bilingualism/biculturalism; deep-seated values for family, language, and culture; experiences of migration and adversity; an appreciation for authenticity and openness; and an unyielding curiosity about the inner workings of their own minds and those of others. I look forward to working with you!

I enjoy working with students who need support in adjusting to all the changes that school inherently comes with leaving home, performance anxiety, finding your people, dating, friends, study habits, getting ready to graduate and finding your next move etc. And through all of this, sometimes there is anxiety, depression, or trauma that makes all of the adjustments more difficult. Therapy can help you sort through all of that so that you have a clear mind and feel more at ease in life. Reach out to me today to schedule a free 15 minute consult to see if we are a match, it's important that you feel a connection with your therapist. I work best with clients who may appear to have it together on the outside while internally feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally exhausted. Many are navigating trauma, OCD, mood changes, identity exploration, or relationship stress. I especially enjoy working with LGBTQ+ clients and those looking for an authentic, supportive, and nonjudgmental space to better understand themselves and heal.
For over 20 years I have worked with teens and young adults as they navigate through life's challenges and transitions. Depression, anxiety, relationship issues or unhelpful thinking patterns can get in the way of living the life we imagine. I enjoy working with clients in a safe, non-judgemental space, where we can identify roadblocks and create a plan that works and allows you to live a fully engaged life!
I help adults in all phases of life. I help my clients work through new and past traumas, and through typical or unexpected life transitions. In therapy we can make meaning, find purpose, or forge new paths. Many clients come for help managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, or addictions. If you need help but don't know what questions to ask, that's okay! You don't have to know exactly what's wrong or what you want. Finding out is part of the process! Therapy can be to heal, recover, sort through, reconnect, rejuvenate, strengthen, or change aspects of your life to make it more manageable & meaningful. I primarily work with college-age students as they navigate this transitional time in their lives. I currently have early and late evening appointments as well as Saturdays 10-1.
Welcome to Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy! My name is Edward Chan, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy. I specialize in supporting Asian American college students and young adults as they navigate the unique challenges that can come from balancing personal goals, family expectations, cultural values, and the pressures of academic and professional success. Many Asian American students grow up carrying messages about achievement, responsibility, sacrifice, and making their families proud. While these values can be sources of strength, they can also contribute to anxiety, perfectionism, self-criticism, burnout, difficulty setting boundaries, and a persistent feeling of never being "good enough." You may find yourself succeeding on paper while privately struggling with stress, loneliness, imposter syndrome, or uncertainty about who you are beyond what you accomplish. Therapy offers a space to slow down and explore these experiences without judgment. Together, we can better understand the influences that have shaped you, process the challenges you're facing, and develop practical tools to manage anxiety, build self-confidence, strengthen relationships, and create a life that feels aligned with your own values—not just the expectations placed upon you. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies including CBT, ACT, DBT, and insight-oriented therapy while remaining sensitive to the cultural, familial, and identity-related experiences that many Asian American students navigate. Whether you're struggling with academic pressure, family dynamics, relationships, career decisions, or your sense of belonging, you don't have to carry it alone. At Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy, I strive to create a space where the experiences that often go unspoken can be explored openly, helping you cultivate greater self-understanding, balance, and fulfillment as you navigate college and beyond.
Are you a young adult struggling to navigate professional life? Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed about the next steps in your life? Are there childhood experiences impacting how you want to show up in your life today? Starting therapy can be daunting, but you're here, so you're one step closer to positively changing your current situation. Experienced mental health professionals in our practice focus on helping clients build awareness of how patterns rooted in early life experiences can impact them in the present. Our clinicians' therapeutic styles vary but are rooted in a strength based approach emphasizing reframing problematic thought patterns and core beliefs. You are the expert in your life, and our services aim to provide support and skills to assist you on your journey!
Do you feel like your emotions get in the way of you achieving your goals, affect your relationships, and keep you feeling stuck? Do you feel frustrated, unable to break patterns, or move forward? Or has a new life transition impacted you greatly and you don’t know where to go from here? My focus is on helping you learn how to regulate your emotions -- to be more in control of them than they are of you. In our sessions, we'll identify patterns, better understand them, and work together to come up with a plan of how to achieve your goals. My background is in CBT, DBT, trauma, grief and loss, and perinatal mental health. It can be hard taking the first step when you're struggling, but you've already done it by being here! If you live in MA or NJ, are open to telehealth sessions, and think we may be a good match, you can learn more about me at my website. I look forward to hearing from you!
I am Counseling psychologist, and I've worked in college mental health for the last five years, first as a therapist at Syracuse University's counseling center, then at Rhode Island School of Design's counseling center. I both provided therapy, and helped train others to provide therapy. I love working with students and helping them adjust to being at a university, figuring out how to cope with the demands of college, and find their way in the university system to make sure that they have access to not just tools for their mental health- but access to academic supports, financial assistance, and resources to help them work with their faculty members. I'm a generalist- I work with people across a wide range of issues and identities, and so I really try to tailor what I'm doing to fit what YOU need. I also have specialised training in LGBTQ+ mental health and treatment for Trauma. I believe that we are whole people, and our identities, culture, and access to resources are important to understand, respond to and support in therapy. I both work to help you understand your experience so you can respond in new and creative ways, and also know and use pragmatic strategy-based approaches that give you concrete ideas how to take the next step. If that sounds like a fit for you, reach out and I'm happy to speak more!
I'm so excited to help you launch your journey to happiness! We will work together to make a customized treatment plan to help you work towards achieving your goals. Making the decision to come to therapy can be a powerful one. I support individuals navigating the various pressures and stresses in their lives. I specialize in working with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. In session, clients feel a space free of judgment where they can reconnect with their authentic selves. With that in mind, I approach sessions in a collaborative way with the hopes of building self-esteem and personal agency. In our sessions, you'll feel like you're part of a team and not up against the problem alone. I also help college students, young working professionals, and athletes manage all that comes with being in a high-pressured environment. My own experience as a collegiate athlete taught me the values of teamwork, resilience, and overcoming anxiety and self-doubt-- all qualities I aim to pass along to my clients. For all clients, mindfulness may be an important part of our work. I bring in tools from Dialectical Behavior Therapy as well as traditional talk therapy to help you establish healthy boundaries, control overwhelming emotions, and stay grounded in the present moment. I also have a special interest in working with athletes transitioning to life after their sports career. My training as a yoga teacher helps me to deeply understand the mind-body connection, and how identity can get tied up athletic performance. I’ll help you develop a new daily routine, find meaningful ways to incorporate exercise at a lower level, manage fluctuating mood, and develop strong relationships outside of sports. Our sessions will feel like you are supported in taking action steps in your life. I am here to listen and provide accountability with changes you are hoping to make in your life.
If you're someone who feels better after talking things through—those who find relief in external processing and venting—you're in the right place. Many of my clients come to me because they feel the need to keep their feelings and thoughts bottled up around friends and family, out of fear of judgment or being a burden. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can express yourself freely. My approach is laid-back and conversational. I’m here to listen, ask questions, and engage in real, down-to-earth discussions. Humor and genuine interactions are part of how I create a comfortable space for you to explore your thoughts and emotions. I work with individuals who are dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, school/career stress, or communication challenges with family members. Clients often tell me that our work together helps them better regulate their emotions, respond to challenges with greater ease, set healthier boundaries, and improve their self-esteem. My therapeutic style is collaborative and non-judgmental, focusing on creating a space where you feel supported and understood. Reach out to see if we may be a good fit!
