I have an extensive clinical psychology background and I have treated individuals of all ages for a variety of problems. For the past 20 years my practice has also included working with students from many colleges in the area, including Berklee , Emerson, Northeastern, Harvard, MIT, and a number of other schools. In addition to the problems which students frequently bring to a therapist's office, such as depression, anxiety, issues around self esteem, gender identity, school performance, worries about the future, and relationship problems, the Covid pandemic and the need for remote learning and social distancing has exacerbated many of these already difficult issues. I can usually schedule a first appointment within one or two days of contact. I meet with patients (remotely) via telephone and video telehealth platforms only, Monday through Friday from 7AM to 4 PM. I accept BXBS, Anthem, First Health, among other health plans, and will help with out-of-network needs.
I specialize in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy; these approaches are particularly suited for such issues as coping with losses, reducing self-criticism, increasing relationship fulfillment and bolstering creativity. Often, I work with people whose prior therapy experience(s) was symptom-oriented or brief but who found themselves wondering if there is something more. I also often work with people in academia, such as graduate students and post-docs. I am particularly passionate about graduate student mental health and am aware of the unique stressors often faced by doctoral students, as well as the factors that make it more challenging to reach out for support. I am aware of the ways that concerns pertaining to identity, belonging and family of origin often begin to come to the fore when one finds themselves in a new environment and/or a new academic/professional endeavor.
I hold an enduring belief in the innate capacity of individuals to grow, heal, and transform. At times, we all lose sight of our core selves and may need help returning back to our true, unburdened nature. In our sessions, I work to create a safe environment where you will develop insight, strengthen inner resources, and increase self-compassion. My work is deeply relational and grounded in the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Through collaboration, we will design a therapy that best suits your needs - bringing warmth, curiosity, and respect into the therapeutic space. My practice centers on helping individuals and couples, with a focus on complex trauma, anxiety, and depression. I also work well with those experiencing challenges with relationships, gender and sexuality, body image, creative blocks and addictions. My name is Elizabeth Barley. I am dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have experience working in an inpatient caring for children and adults. I also have other various areas that I have worked in from the hospital setting, home health, and palliative/hospice care. I received both my Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatrist Nurse Practitioner degrees from Purdue Global University. While attending school I worked at an inpatient mental health clinic and worked remotely as a family nurse practitioner. My focus is on the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other chronic mental health illnesses through psychiatric assessment, medication management,t, and brief psychotherapeutic intervention. I believe in creating an individualized plan of care that values client involvement, interprofessional collaboration, and evidenced-based practice. My goal for my clients is to feel empowered to treat their illnesses through supportive education in a safe environment.
