I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a deep passion for working with young adults. I believe the early adult years are some of the most important—and often most misunderstood—seasons of life. Rather than something to simply “get through,” I view this stage as a powerful period of identity formation, growth, and possibility. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After spending a year living abroad, I went on to receive her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University. Throughout my graduate training and post-master’s clinical work, I have supported youth and families across a range of settings, including in-home therapy, group home care, outpatient clinics, and municipal mental health. I understand that young adulthood can feel overwhelming—whether it’s anxiety, relationships, school, or simply trying to figure things out. Therapy with me is a place to slow things down and make sense of what’s going on. Sessions feel like a real conversation, where clients can explore their experiences, connect patterns, and develop strategies that are actually useful in everyday life. My goal is to create a space where clients feel comfortable, understood, and supported as they navigate this stage.
You don’t have to have the “right words” or everything figured out. In sessions we will work through what’s been feeling hard and work toward understanding your thoughts, emotions, and patterns in a supportive way.
Nice to meet you! My name is Jennifer. I'm a clinical psychologist in Boston, MA. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma. Please take a look at my website (jenniferhuggphd.com) for more info on the kinds of therapy I provide. If you have any questions, or would like to learn next steps to get started working together, please get in touch by sending an email! You can also call or text me at 515-218-8321
The treatment I provide is influenced by relational, attachment-based, and psychodynamic modalities. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, life transitions, identity concerns, trauma, and stress related to work and relationships. I work with adults of all ages and backgrounds to address their presenting symptoms, as well as explore the underlying roots of these symptoms to establish long-term benefits. I believe therapy is most effective when there is a trusting and open therapeutic relationship, so we will work together to identify a meaningful approach to your care. I’m experienced in working with culturally diverse and LGBTQ populations. Prior to earning my degree in counseling, I worked with LGBTQ youth and young adults in the Boston community at a nonprofit organization dedicated to health education. I understand how difficult it can be to find a good match in therapy, I encourage you to contact me for an initial phone call, and we can discuss how we might work together.
Are you seeking to understand yourself better? Are you looking to make sense of your relationship dynamics? Do you wish things were better, but you don't know how to get there? You CAN feel empowered by an expanding of your understanding, gathering insight, and educating the choices you make in how you decide to live your life. I work with couples, and adults to help make sense of obstacles, understand how relationship histories effect life today, and become more comfortable with themselves. This is done in an atmosphere where you are accepted for who you are. We can discuss your goals. Many people feel uncomfortable considering therapy as an option for themselves. It can be difficult asking for help, believing that asking for help means we are inadequate in some way. In a do-it-yourself culture, reaching out to others can cause us to feel like we are less than, but trying to meet our own needs is actually a strength. My clients often report that they have gained more insight into their lives, that they feel more at home within themselves and more capable of handling life's difficulties as they inevitably arise. Couples leave my office feeling like they understand themselves and their partner more clearly, and report greater relationship satisfaction.
I am a client-centered psychologist who works with adults and adolescents (13+). I believe therapy should involve the whole person - including our internal, social, societal, spiritual, and physical selves. I invite clients to be collaborators in finding and exploring what will help them achieve growth. I provide a warm, inclusive, and nonjudgmental environment and believe a strong client-therapist relationship is essential for growth and change. I integrate aspects of multiple therapeutic modalities, including behavioral approaches (CBT, DBT, behavioral medicine/health psychology), mindfulness-based interventions, humanism, existential, relational and developmental theory, motivational interviewing, and psychodynamic-informed care. I help patients/clients address a range of concerns including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use struggles, difficulties in relationships, grief/loss, identifying life goals, navigating life transitions, and balancing work-life demands. I received my training at William James College (Newton, MA). Trained with Advocates Community Counseling, Rutgers University College Counseling, and Boston Behavioral Medicine. I completed a post-doctoral behavioral health fellowship at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and worked there as a staff psychologist until October 2019. I have worked extensively in individual therapy, worked with adolescents and their caregivers, and have led mindfulness skills groups and anxiety skills groups. I am an ally and welcome all gender identities and sexualities.
As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I integrate a medical-model approach with supportive therapy to provide compassionate, comprehensive care. While diagnostic labels can help guide medication decisions, my focus is on understanding the deeper context of your challenges—exploring symptom triggers, emotional meanings, and how relationships influence your coping style. Mutual respect and trust are the foundation of my practice, and I am committed to creating a relaxed, non-judgmental space where honesty, transparency, and collaboration empower you to take an active role in your treatment. I treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, addiction, OCD, complex grief, and chronic illnesses. Together, we’ll work toward authentic growth, healthier choices, and a more positive outlook on life.
You smile and say “I’m fine” but it's not true. You don’t necessarily know what’s wrong so sometimes you even convince yourself you're OK. You feel overwhelmed trying to balance the demands of being a student, living on your own, preparing for your future, maintaining relationships with family/friends, gaining financial independence, etc. It feels like everybody around you has it all under control. You want to talk to someone who only has YOU in mind. You deserve to find a therapist who will listen, care, support and advocate for you. I have experience working with college-aged students who present with a variety of concerns including: ADHD, anxiety and depression, domestic violence, eating disorders, grief/loss, life transitions, relational conflict, self-esteem issues, stress management, substance use, and trauma. Check out my website to learn more about me! I offer an initial 45-minute consultation free of charge to all potential clients so you can make sure I am a good fit for you. When we face difficulties, it can be helpful to organize our thoughts and feelings and understand our behaviors in order to facilitate meaningful change. Whether you are going through a life transition, navigating difficulties related to past traumas, enduring interpersonal difficulties, experiencing a loss, suffering from mental health symptoms, or in need of some support, it can be helpful to work with a mental health professional. As a licensed psychologist I look at my clients within a context of their environment, culture, values, and goals. I have worked with diverse adults experiencing various stressors that interefere with their everyday life with the goal of improving daily living. When working with clients, I used a strength-based approach and acknowledge that you are the expert. I work to validate your experience, while also encouraging you to change in a way that is more adaptive and allows for you to improve your everyday life.

The Narrative Network offers collaborative therapy for people across Massachusetts and brings therapists together for supervision, training, and ongoing relationships with the ideas and practices called narrative therapy. We believe people are more than the problems they are facing. Difficulties take shape in lives, relationships, histories, and social worlds — and therapy can create room to notice the values, knowledges, commitments, and relationships that may have become harder to see when life is difficult.
