Life can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to balance responsibilities, relationships, work, and expectations while also managing anxiety, stress, or unresolved trauma. You may appear to be holding it all together on the outside while struggling internally with burnout, overthinking, self-pressure, or feeling emotionally stuck. I specialize in helping clients process, heal, and grow through life transitions, anxiety, and trauma in a supportive and nonjudgmental space. I utilize evidence-based approaches including EMDR, CBT, DBT, and ACT to help clients move beyond survival mode toward greater clarity, balance, confidence, and emotional relief. I believe therapy works best when you feel safe, respected, and actively involved in the process, so I take a collaborative and personalized approach focused on building insight, strengthening coping skills, and helping you create a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.

I am also available for a wide variety of issues and predominantly work with individual adults, couples, and polycules! **Some Insurance Accepted in NC through Headway** I practice via telehealth in NY, NC, WA, and TX. I specialize in working with adult men and women who are secretly miserable. You may look fine on the outside, but inside you're struggling to get your own needs met, codependency, perfectionism, and shame. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking at just the cognitive, linear perspectives of the person. It demands of the therapist an awareness of the body and how it manifests in the psyche. Through its focus on process rather than content, the patient gains an experiential awareness of how they do what they do and new choices emerge spontaneously. The radical focus on process in the creative therapy of Gestalt keeps the work alive and full of possibility for both the patient and my work as a therapist. Melissa Bennett-Heinz obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work from Columbia University (Class of 2002) and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City, NY. In addition to her background in Gestalt Therapy, she obtained her bachelor's and master’s degrees from the esteemed conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, in New York City where she majored in Oboe Performance. Melissa completed cognitive behavioral studies under the tutelage of Dr. William Sanderson. She is a licensed clinical social worker in NY, WA, NC, and TX and has over twenty years of specialized training and experience in PTSD, childhood abuse, mood and anxiety disorders. Melissa brings her background as a classical musician and deep spirituality together in her unique approach in Gestalt's creative and experiential therapy.
I mainly help people who are experiencing challenges with anxiety, depression, setting boundaries, and relationships. Another group with whom I work are members of the adoption triad, being an adoptive mother myself and having worked in adoption for a number of years. I use a combination of modalities and together with my clients choose ones that work best with a particular challenge they may be experiencing. I believe that clients are strong and just need assistance in believing in themselves, so I focus on strengths rather than the medical model of "What's wrong with you?" Clients tell me that they love my positivity and sense of humor.
Have you found yourself struggling with feeling overwhelmed way more than you would like to admit? Has your anxiety washed over you with no rhyme or reason, only to leave you feeling exhausted and confused? Transitioning back to "normal life" and having adult responsibilities is hard enough, but when you add anxiety to the mix--things tend to get interesting (and probably not in the way you would like). My perspective in therapy is that everyone has their own “coping skills toolbox” and it is my job to help you polish the rusty tools that you haven’t used in a while and make room for new and improved tools that are just for you. I will be your accountability partner by supporting and challenging you when needed. While sometimes our lives can feel out of control, many times all we need is a little boost from an outside person to help us move through overwhelming situations. I believe the most important part of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client, so please reach out for a free 15 minute consultation to see if we would be a good fit!

I help to assess your strengths and areas of growth then develop a plan to use those to improve your life. I enjoy working with individuals who want to find out who they are and where they want to go. I specialize in working with people going through major life transitions, desire to have a stronger sense of identity, and asking serious questions about their view of life. Further, I work closely with those going through spiritual questioning, no matter their faith. Overall, I am looking to work with anyone who desires to develop a better sense of who they are and where they want to go. I look forward to hearing from you and help you discover yourself.

You're both reflective, and self-critical, constantly trying to prove yourself. The strive for perfection, and loud inner critic leave you feeling exhausted both physically and emotionally. You want to feel better, but don't know where to begin... Whether you're navigating anxiety, processing trauma, or you’re exploring your relationship with food and/or your body, I want you to know things can get better. My work focuses on empowering college aged and younger adult women as they begin to connect with who they are, clarify what is important to them, and cultivate a life where they feel fulfilled, connected, and energized. My approach is warm, relational, trauma informed, and direct. I use humor when appropriate, and encourage my clients to show up authentically. I integrate somatic (body) based interventions like gentle movement, breathwork, and ifs-parts work with cognitive approaches to help you better identify, understand, and work through your thoughts and feelings. My passion is helping women explore and improve their relationships with food, their bodies, and ultimately, themselves. Together we can explore the deep rooted narratives you hold, and work on building a new story that feels both empowering and tangible. I strongly believe we heal through safe connection, so if you're ready and willing, let's connect!
College can feel like constant pressure — perform well, make the right choices, keep it together, don’t fall behind. I work especially well with high-achieving students who look like they have it handled on the outside but feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck internally. Whether it’s performance anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, relationship stress, or just feeling like you’re never doing “enough,” we’ll work together in a structured, practical way. I use evidence-based tools (primarily CBT) to help you understand how your thoughts, emotions, and habits are connected — and to build skills you can actually use between sessions. My goal is to create a supportive space where you can be real, feel understood, and leave with strategies that help you move forward with more confidence and clarity. I offer virtual therapy and accept multiple major insurance plans. Book directly through my scheduling link at the bottom of this page to verify insurance and availability.
