Therapists for college students near Rice University
Courtney Shields
I work with young people who are navigating life and its many challenges. I specialize in trauma treatment and in working with difficult and complex situations wherein trauma, development, and mental health converge. My clients tend to have tried counseling and, for various reasons, feel it did not work for them. My clients are often struggling to show up in traditional therapy, feeling trapped in their suffering, frozen and unable to move. I work with them to find personal power and agency over their dissociative tendencies, to find healing and purpose again. I believe everyone can heal in relationship, especially young people.
DeAvila Ford
You have always given your all in your relationships. Whether it was with your parent, friends, or intimate partners; you wanted healthy relationships in your life. However, you often ended up feeling like you were not enough for any of them. You often felt rejected and disposable. You didn’t realize that this would impact you, but it has. Now, you often isolate yourself or just remain in relationships with toxic people who often use you for what they need and discard you. You have never felt good enough and often wondered if you would truly ever be loved adequately. However, you are enough and deep down you know that. And I am here to help you discover it. My name is DeAvila and I am a Mental Health Psychotherapist. I aid my clients in understanding where the root of feeling inadequate started and how to heal from those experiences. The world has told you that you were someone else and the world was so wrong. I help my clients discover who they are and aid them in becoming who they choose to be. . DeAvila Sadé, LCSW, LSSW is trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR Certified, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I work frequently with young adults as they manage increasing independence, college and work. I understand the challenges involved with balancing academic requirements, personal stressors and self care. Additionally, I am experienced in helping clients who are wanting to change their relationship patterns and behaviors, and those struggling to find effective ways to deal with symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and codependency. As a clinical psychologist, I assist my clients in meeting their goals and improving their relationships. Therapy is used to improve communication, coping skills and problem solving. One of my areas of expertise is in helping clients who are working through a particularly challenging time in their lives, and having difficulty moving forward from their experience. By encouraging self expression, increased insight and problem solving in therapy, I work collaboratively with clients to facilitate positive changes. Improving self esteem through greater understanding and acceptance of oneself is part of that work.

Maybe you know exactly what you want to work on, OR you are uncertain and don't know where to start, I'm here to help! My work is to learn about you, and work alongside you to create a safe place for you to process life events, unlearn unhelpful thoughts or behaviors, build coping skills, find direction, and work towards inner peace. Together we can re-gain a sense of control as no matter what has led you here, I believe in the human capacity to adapt and grow with the right support. Finding the right therapist can be a tricky and vulnerable experience. My work is rooted in values of authenticity and humility, as I find it an honor to walk alongside folks as they explore their inner self and seek to understand important relationships and connections in their life. Cynthia Viera, Ph.D., LPCC
I am a licensed professional counselor in California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico. Currently, I am doing remote counseling only. I have experience in trauma, anxiety, grief/loss, addiction, anger management and life transitions. I am multi-culturally sensitive and LGBTQIA+ affirming. I was born in El Paso, Texas and both my parents are Mexican-American. I am bilingual Spanish/English. I moved to California in 2021 after living in Arizona for 30 years where I was faculty at Phoenix College teaching Psychology, Sociology and Women's Studies. I have Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology (ASU) and an MA in Counseling (OU). I believe life is not about the destination but about the journey. Sometimes we run into rough spots along the way. Let me walk beside you for a while until you get past the rough spots and are able to continue on your own. Counseling is a process that you control by telling me what you want to accomplish and then we work together to get there. Sharing your story with a stranger is sometimes hard. I want to be your ally in therapy and provide a safe space where you can talk and be yourself without fear of judgment. I promise to be honest with you and support you as you explore who you are and who you want to be. I will work to earn your trust and to shine a light on the road ahead as we travel.

You’re anxious and frustrated. Maybe lost, confused, and overwhelmed. My hope as your therapist is that you see hope in just visiting this page. You're done hiding, avoiding, and repressing. This is step 1 towards healing. I invite you to take a step further. Together, we will bring clarity to your situation, process unresolved emotions, and develop coping skills for enduring positive change. When you are sitting across from me, my goal is for you to feel safe, understood, and encouraged. I am here to help you unlearn thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve you—to explore and unravel unhealthy habits, toxic ways of interacting with others, and harmful statements you unconsciously rehearse when you’re feeling your absolute worst. I focus on your strengths and take into account your family dynamics, how you were raised, and any trauma you have experienced. In session with me, you can expect me to ask you how you deal with negative emotions. I also want to know about your relationships, culture, and community. I received my Master of Science in Counseling from Southern Methodist University, where I studied Clinical Mental Health with specialization in Marriage, Couples, and Family. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Harvard College. To set up a free 15-minute consultation, please visit www.jackieleecounseling.com

Dr. Ryne Pulido PLLC
Hello! I’m Dr. Ryne Pulido. I’m a husband, father, and psychologist in Texas. I’m so excited to help folks build lives experienced as worth living and sharing. I started out as a therapist for children, adolescents, and young adults. Initially, “young adult” referred to college students. Then “young adult” expanded to include medical and law school students. And then it expanded to include early career professionals. Now, it has expanded to early career professionals struggling to #adult. Your struggle is real. Many of my clients struggle with intense emotional pain stemming from feelings of unlovability and fear of rejection. Their pain acts like an emotional dictator that commands them to withdraw from friends, family, work, school, hobbies, passions, interests, and other activities that make life worth living. Increasingly distant from their values (who they want to be deep inside their hearts) and goals (what they want to accomplish), they feel directionless and unsure of their best life because they’re so focused on protecting themselves from emotional pain. If this sounds like you, know it doesn’t have to be this way. You deserve a life worth living and sharing. Imagine what it would be like to control your actions (the things you do and say) amidst an emotional storm. What if you could be the person you want to be and move toward your goals just 20% more often? What would your relationships be like? Where would your career be? How much better would your sleep be?! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) I utilize a modern form of the tried-and-true Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Although ACT involves a radically new approach to happiness, over 1,000 clinical trials have been published in peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating its effectiveness with diverse populations struggling with a wide range of psychological problems. ACT is focused on creating richer, fuller, and more meaningful lives rather than solely symptom reduction. When your life is bigger, the pain is smaller by comparison. ACT is a very active form of therapy. It’s not just talking about your problems and feelings (although there is always space for that). You will learn practical skills to move from struggling to flourishing. We will move through the program step-by-step, learning skills that build on each other. The good news is the skills are easy to learn and effective. You are headed into the unknown. Unfortunately, counseling and therapy is not 100% effective. Although I accept commercial insurance (if you go through Alma) and the Lotus Fund, the risk of committing time, money, effort, and heart to something that doesn’t work out is very real. I also can’t promise that you won’t feel uncomfortable, judged, and misunderstood, but you will have permission to express yourself and stop anything that is uncomfortable. I’ll listen with an open mind and you’re in the driver’s seat. But you are not alone. It’s your journey, but we’re a team—working together to help you become the person you want to be and build the life you want to live and share. All brains matter. I’ve spent my entire professional career working with neurodivergent folks and their families. I have a special place in my heart for ADHDers, autistics, and people with strong personalities. Are you in Texas, prefer virtual care, and ready to get to work? You can contact me by email (admin@rynepulidophd.com) or by calling or texting 512-537-4743. (Note it can take up to 72 hours for me to return a call, email, or text. If you are in a mental health emergency, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest ER). …and if you’re sort of ready that’s cool too. Reach out to me to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation! Need financial help? I offer sliding-scale fee slots via Open Path Collective. These slots are extremely limited, so please get in touch with me before signing up to work with me. I also accept the Lotus Fund via the Asian Mental Health Collective.

Nicholas Bueno
I help clients better understand what’s holding them back and develop practical skills that support meaningful, lasting change. What makes my practice unique is a strong emphasis on goal-setting and progress. I work with clients who want more than insight alone, they want to see change reflected in their daily lives and relationships. My approach to therapy is collaborative, intentional, and practical. I believe therapy works best when clients feel actively involved in the process and leave sessions with insight they can apply in real life. Please use my website to book an appointment.
