I work with young adults navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, academic pressure, social difficulties, and family-related issues. My approach is to provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can openly express themselves, strengthen their resilience, and develop effective coping strategies to manage life's challenges.
My name is Erick Pena. I struggled with depression and anxiety for about 20 years, and it wasn't until I read a book called "Getting Past Your Past" by Francine Shapiro that everything started to make sense. As a therapist, I offer traditional talk therapy, but I am incredibly passionate about EMDR therapy. I believe that in the same way talk and EMDR therapy have helped me deal with the negative symptoms that plagued my life for so long, they can also help you.
My approach to therapy focuses on creating a warm, open, and supportive environment where clients feel at ease. I believe that building a strong therapeutic relationship is essential for fostering trust and promoting meaningful growth. I graduated from University of Delaware in 2011 with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Disabilities Studies. In 2016 I graduated from Michigan State University with a Masters in Clinical Social Work. I obtained my clinical license in the state of Delaware in 2018. I have maintained an independent practice since 2018 in addition to my full time career as a medical social worker. I have extensive experience with children with Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, grief, and bereavement as well as various orthopedic conditions. I have had training with DIR Floortime Approach, Sand Tray Therapy, and Play Therapy.
I have personally experienced medical issues with my own children, childhood trauma, and sports related injuries. I have also personally dealt with anxiety and depression. I've had my own therapy journey, so understand how you feel throughout the process. We will explore past and current experiences you've had, as well as options that will be beneficial for you. I have years of experience with clients with disabilities, autism, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and trauma. I was one of the lead therapists assisting survivors of the Parkland School shooting. I strive for a comfortable, open environment where you can discuss any issue freely. We work together as a team on this journey!
When I was a student in college, my parents were going through a bitter divorce and I lost a close friend from school and three family members all in one year. I felt as if I was losing my mind. My close friends connected me with a therapist and it literally changed my life. I felt heard, supported and validated and was given permission to let things go and actually focus on my issues and my needs instead of everyone else’s. This is one of the main reasons why I practice therapy and have a heart for college-age students. I was you once and I hope to help just as I was once helped. We all go through seasons in our lives when things just feel too overwhelming or we feel as if we cannot get through it without a little help. I believe that is what therapy is for. It is to help us find our voices and find ourselves again. In the seasons when we feel lost and hopeless, a therapist can help empower us to find the strength to overcome our challenges and heal from our pain. I am a firm believer in the notion that we only live once on this earth. Make the most of it. Heal the hurt. Develop a growth mindset. Live a life that is full so that you can thrive at being the best version of you! I am honored to help you get there!

This is not the end for you, but a beginning to rewriting the story of your life. Let’s work together toward a plan and action steps that accomplish becoming the connected, clear, and courageous person that will be consistent with your newly-defined values. I also enjoy integrating EMDR with Internal Family Systems, another effective approach. Let's talk before you come in. Feel free to give me a call to discuss what has brought you to seeking help and what you'd like your life to look like after therapy.

Therapy is the ultimate form of self care. It can lead to radical self-acceptance, allowing you to manifest the positive goals you have for your life. Seeking therapy traditionally has had barriers, and I know breaking those barriers will create a better, more accessible, revolutionary, and empathic society. My clinical interests include working with LGBTQIA+ issues, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, domestic violence, and times of adjustment and change. I come from person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-focused modalities. I utilize an eclectic approach in our sessions, as each client is different. I believe in a therapeutic relationship that is equal and balanced. Our goals will be mutual and dynamic. You are an expert in your life, and I look forward to working together to create the healthy and positive change you see for yourself.
We believe that you are the master of your own life, and we believe that therapy is a joint process that we can navigate together. We cannot "fix" you or tell you what you "should" do. The journey is yours. We can be a support, and provide a safe space. We can guide you in learning and using tools which will allow you to better manage your symptoms and create and maintain healthy boundaries with yourself and others. The tools you learn and develop while you are going through your therapeutic journey are meant to also allow you to improve your ability to self-soothe, create and maintain healthier boundaries in your relationships, make decisions more effectively, and to better support, assert, and advocate for yourself once therapy ends. You are capable. Our mission is to provide more accessible services to underserved clients, particularly in the LGBTQIA+ community, folx with neurodivergence, racial and ethnic minorities, and for other underserved populations who lack access to in-person services, or lack access to counselors competent in these areas due to living in areas that are smaller, more rural, or more conservative.

The clients I've worked with that have reported the greatest success all have one thing in common: They tried their hardest in and out of session to challenge themselves. I firmly believe that every person has the answers they are searching for within themselves. I often work with clients to build up their faith & trust within themselves so that they no longer go through life second guessing everything they do. During the young adult stage of life people often believe that they are supposed to have everything in their life figured out. I believe that if you really work hard at getting to know yourself, you will have all the tools you'll need to figure out what is best for you going forward.

Accepting new clients! Life throws some real shit at us, and each of us deals with this in different ways. I am quite sure you have been judged by people who just don't get it. Or, maybe you're a person who doesn't show you are having struggles and you hide them. Either way, we all handle our shit differently, but I am here to help you. I have only one way in life, and that is authenticity with some added humor, OH, and some swear words here and there (it's my love language). If you have read this far, I might be your gal! Shoot me an email. I specialize in anxiety, and if you are here, you definitely can use some relief!
