Beginning therapy is an act of care for yourself and we could all do a little more in that regard. Maybe you have been carrying stress that feels impossible to shake, dealing with intrusive thoughts, or trying to find your footing with identity, relationships, or purpose. My role is to help you explore what’s beneath the surface and create meaningful and lasting change. In our sessions you'll find a space where your voice is heard and where you do not have to filter yourself. My approach is compassionate and collaborative. I use evidence based methods like CBT, narrative therapy, and metacognitive therapy, but more importantly I focus on listening closely & adapting to what you need. If you are in Michigan and looking for in person or online therapy I usually have evening or some limited weekend openings, so feel free to inquire. If you’re ready to begin this journey, feel free to send me a message or give me a call. I believe in meeting my clients with understanding and care, no matter their starting point. Together, we can navigate the path toward the life you're envisioning. If you're ready to reach out, I'll be happy to get us started.

Dr. Dawn Del Rio is a fully licensed psychotherapist practicing in the state of Michigan. After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and clinical social work from MSU, she attended the ULM and received her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Post her doctorate, she obtained her Sex Therapy and Sexual Health Educator and Sports Performance certificates from the University of Michigan. Dr. Del Rio's educational path has provided a unique recipe of both micro and macro perspectives and has informed her clinical interpretations. Her psychology degree provided an emphasis on personality and human development, social work solidified her advocacy and social justice stance, marriage and family therapy strengthened her understanding of the systems and patterns within couple and family units, and her sex therapy and sexual health educator program expanded her understanding of orientation, intimacy, and human sexuality. Dr. Del Rio has worked in the mental health field for 30 years, across a variety of settings, including inpatient care, community mental health, assessment and crisis intervention, outpatient clinics, and private practice. She specializes in the treatment of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, trauma, and relationships. She is trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Sex Therapy and Sexual Health, and Crisis Incident Stress Management. Dr. Del Rio has a broad range of clinical experiences working primarily with adults in the following areas: anxiety disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, OCD, anger and stress management, relationships, divorce, sexual health, depression, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, and sports performance. She also serves in the role of clinical supervisor to help meet the educational needs of graduate students from MSU and the University of Michigan. Dr. Del Rio's approach to treatment involves a biopsychosocial and person-centered perspective. She works collaboratively with her clients, examining the person and their environment. Dawn will stay the course with her clients while simultaneously recognizing their need to be accountable, engaged, and present during the therapeutic process. She adopts a nonjudgmental stance while concurrently addressing life-interfering behaviors and the need for healthy change. She actively seeks to acknowledge her clients' strengths, explore solutions, identify constructive areas of control, and teach skills to improve her clients' functioning and quality of life.

You’re not alone if you’re realizing you might have OCD. Many people spend years stuck in their heads, battling intrusive thoughts, compulsions, hyper-specific fears, or chronic anxiety that pulls them away from the lives they want to live. I specialize in treating OCD and related disorders including perinatal and postpartum OCD, health anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, specific phobias, emetophobia, and coping with anxiety-induced hypertension. My practical, evidence-based approach provides tools to manage symptoms, challenge unhelpful patterns, and build lasting resilience so you can feel more in control in your daily life. OCD commits many crimes against its sufferers, but one of the cruelest is the hope it steals. You can feel better than you do now. This doesn’t have to be your life. I use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients face fears, reduce compulsions, and reclaim a meaningful life. All sessions are online. Visit my website to schedule a consult. We will work together to pinpoint actionable steps and build coping skills, so you can begin to see positive changes right away. My online therapy services through telehealth are ideal for busy individuals and those who prefer the comfort of home for their counseling sessions. Life is nuanced. It is filled with choices, priorities, curve balls, imperfection, and grace. It is a commemoration of beginnings and endings. I specialize in working with individuals going through significant transition. This could be career change, terminating a relationship, processing through grief or simply wanting to change a habit. I am here to support, empower, and advocate for you as you go through change and find secure footing in uncertain times. My approach to therapy is purposely eclectic and person-centered, and sometimes incorporates creative/artistic recovery into treatment. It is my experience that positive change is best achieved through a collaborative approach to treatment. It is my intention through our therapeutic relationship that you understand the inherent wisdom you possess and that you recognize your personal strengths which allows you to live an authentic and purposeful life. Most of my work has been in agencies and academia. I have worked with individuals in substance abuse recovery, individuals processing through traumas, individuals trying to manage overwhelming emotions and seeking coping skills, individuals who are wanting a healthier relationship with their body, and individuals who are going through transitions or career exploration.

Accepting new clients! Life throws some real shit at us, and each of us deals with this in different ways. I am quite sure you have been judged by people who just don't get it. The years of your twenties can be a time of growth and change. It also is a time filled with feelings of self-doubt, loneliness, and stress. You are being faced with challenges that didn't exist for your parents at your age. Now more than ever adolescents and young adults ages 13 and up are experiencing increasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and difficulties with relationships. Times are not what they used to be and you deserve to be heard. Your opinions and feelings matter! You have worth and your voice is valued. If judgment from others didn't exist, what goals and dreams would you reach for I am with you on this journey, to discover your strengths, empower your soul, uncovering the passion within you. I provide a safe and empathetic environment that utilizes skills focusing on regulating emotions, improving relationships, cognitive distortions, while also incorporating strengths to increase confidence and true acceptance of self. When I was in my twenties, rather than feeling possibilities were endless, I struggled with feeling lost and alone. This period represented inadequacy and defeat. They were the most challenging years in my life. Through the battle with myself, I discovered my passion and ability to truly relate and understand this age group. Hi there! I am so excited to sit with you and be present as you engage in the therapeutic process. Taking the walk to receive the care you deserve is often the hardest step, so I am excited to be here with you to cheer you through it! In this life, we face a whirlwind of different scenarios that may create ups and downs in our timeline. And even more often, our internal voice may guide us in a way that sets us back. Together, as we establish our therapeutic relationship, I will work with you to empower you and help you explore how to reach your full potential! As a growing counselor, I have been able to gain a breadth of different experiences throughout my education. Hailing from Western Michigan University, I have had experiences working with individuals with developmental disabilities (behavioral) and was fascinated by people’s different stories and how all of our domains in life affect us in so many different ways! As I embarked on the clinical route, I have had experience working in individual and group counseling settings. As a neurodivergent individual myself, I understand what it’s like to feel those struggles inside and outside of ourselves. I aim to create a space for you to have that voice, the tools, and structural pieces to bring to the outside world. In our work, I often explore from a CBT, DBT, ACT, person-centered, and/or humanistic perspective. I also integrate faith-based counseling, spirituality counseling, as well as mindfulness based practices to help navigate the intersection between physical and mental growth. I work with anyone in our space from ages 13-100+, offering both individual and, now, group services (please reach out for more info on group, if interested)! In this space, my biggest goal is to recognize, ensure, and promote your safety and comfort, and collaboratively create a plan tailored to your success and well-being with the right tools for you. I will act as the facilitator to your growth, where you will always be the expert. My clinical interests involve working with neurodivergent individuals (autism, ADHD), life transitions, self-identity, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, anger management, boundary-setting/communication, relationship issues, as well as trauma-focused work. I’m excited to meet with you and look forward to what’s to come!
