Therapists for college students near New York, NY
I take a person-centered approach to therapy. You, the client, are totally in charge of where this journey takes us. I believe that the core of successful therapy is in the bond between client and therapist. As such, I always meet my clients where they are at and work to build a strong relationship through genuine and honest conversations. I am skilled in CBT/DBT, and I hold a certification in Clinical Trauma Treatment (CCTP). Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with adolescents and young adults to build introspection, curiosity, and compassion in order to address their concerns with anxiety, depression, and trauma. Listen, life can get really messy, so let's dig in together. Because you are worthy of growth and change and happiness.
You may want something different from your life, but you’re not sure what it is or how to go about getting it. You could have questions about relationships, career, or identity. Or perhaps you have been finding yourself overtaken by strong emotions at unexpected times. You need a space to talk, think, feel, and explore your world - both the parts that are acknowledged and also the parts that feel mysterious or shrouded. I see psychotherapy as a process of discovery. Through this process, you will have the opportunity to learn about yourself, including the parts of you that are hard to reach or difficult to know. I believe that a person cannot be fully defined in terms of a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. We are complex beings with unique temperaments and lived experiences, and we exist in a world of complex and sometimes oppressive systems. I see you first and foremost as an individual and acknowledge the courage and vulnerability it takes to seek out therapy. I practice psychodynamic therapy through an anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming lens. This work can allow you to have greater self-knowledge; to grow, and to consider and perhaps to make different decisions in your life. My approach is to bring curiosity, empathy, and insight to your current situation and to go from there.
Hey, glad you're here! Being a student is not just about education, is it? We've got lives outside of school, and all those moving parts can get us feeling overwhelmed, going a million miles per hour all the time, burnt out, lost, unmotivated, or even just numb. I work best with clients who are open to feedback, stay consistent in their care, and stay curious to explore different perspectives of their narrative. AKA, all I ask is that you show up to this space that I will prepare for you in which you can be totally you. Without the filters, photoshop, and all the overthinking of what the "right" thing to say is. You don't have to hold onto everything you're going through alone. Let's speak it out and game plan together on a weekly basis. If you feel like you don't even have the language to describe your experience, that's okay! We can build from the ground up. Maybe it'll help to think of it like this: I'm offering therapy like a key to a secret room that no one else has access to but you and I. You can learn and master skills in our therapeutic space, and it won't impact the real world at all because what happens and is heard in here, stays in here. That could look like role-playing a confrontational discussion you might've been avoiding with your roommate or just even saying an insecurity out loud for the first time and reality-checking it. It also just might be practicing how to say 'No' to different people in your life and finally setting boundaries that actually serve you. Then, when you're ready, you take those skills into the real world, and we watch your life change, perhaps slowly, but surely. Therapist shopping can definitely be overwhelming, so I invite you to get to know me through a 10-minute consultation through Zoom. I'll answer any questions, we'll be able to put a face and voice to the name, and you can feel out the overall vibe!
Starting therapy can feel hard and overwhelming. As a licensed social worker, I create a warm, engaging, and comforting environment where we will work together to reduce your stress and help you cope with life's challenges. Within our work together, I will draw on my experience with cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, relational therapy, and trauma informed care to tailor the treatment to your needs. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing a range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, transitions, and relationship issues. I am especially passionate about treating college students and young adults who are often facing many difficult transitions. While transitions can be very stressful, I have found that they can also be an opportunity for change and the beginnings of a new identity. I am an inclusive therapist who works to create a space that is accepting and nonjudgmental. My belief is that we all have the strength to overcome and grow through life’s challenges. I am passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health and building strong relationships with clients in order to meet their goals and develop lifelong skills. I view therapy as a partnership and look forward to working alongside you.
We believe that excellent therapy improves students lives in substantial, meaningful ways, which is what you should expect when you get started. We are a group of highly trained psychologists who love working with students to improve their lives and make changes.
College can break you in quiet ways. Maybe you’re burnt out but still grinding. Anxious but still pretending. You can’t focus, you can’t sleep, you can’t talk about it without feeling like you’re being too much—or not enough. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re just overwhelmed, and no one taught you how to deal with it. This is where that changes. Dr. Al-Katib works with college students who are overthinking everything, underperforming despite trying, and getting swallowed by pressure—academic, emotional, social, or all of the above. He helps with ADHD, anxiety, panic, burnout, identity, emotional numbness, and everything else that comes with growing up in chaos. His style is straightforward, respectful, and never sugarcoated. You’ll get strategy, clarity, and support that actually helps you move—not just talk about it. You don’t have to be falling apart to ask for help. But if you are—good. You’ve already taken the first step.

Psychoanalytic therapy provides you with unique experience that focuses on uncovering your unconscious thoughts and lets you articulate them in a protected space. I work with high-functioning accomplished adults and college students who suffer from anxiety, depression, and trauma-related discomfort. Although my clients have generally achieved success and stability through their careers and academic accomplishments, they have become alienated from their need for connectedness and authentic relationships. This alienation commonly expresses itself as free-floating anxiety, and/or troubling interpersonal relationships (such as unsatisfying romantic relationships, toxic friendships, or workplace conflict). The roots of these experiences are often found in maladaptive coping mechanisms that worked for my clients earlier in life but limit them in the present. I help my clients reflect on their interpersonal relationships, focusing on how clients unconsciously cultivate relationships into re-enactments of painful earlier experiences. I also guide clients through the exploration of their relationships with themselves, identifying negative self-talk and self-sabotaging behaviors that hold them back from achieving their goals and experiencing profound satisfaction. Further, I use my human resources experience to coach patients through workplace conflicts/conflict resolution, communication roadblocks, and time management challenges. Bringing these various elements together, I guide my patients to live a life that is more satisfying and meaningful. I also help clients who have suffered through trauma (including intergenerational trauma) process painful material using EMDR.

TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. I take my work very seriously, which means that I strive to take myself very much not-seriously. Some sessions, you may need to cry. Some sessions you may need to laugh. This is a space for healing and growth. The most necessary ingredients for both of these things are warmth and play. My sessions can best be described as an abundance of warmth and play. I hold a Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from University of Pennsylvania, which I obtained with a focus on positive sexuality and living your best sexual self. I hold a Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Education (EdM) in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University, which I earned with a heavy emphasis on applying a social justice and multicultural lens to therapy. While at Columbia, I also received an Advanced Certificate in Sexuality, Women, and Gender with my focus on LGBTQQIA and open/polyamorous clients in therapy.
My intention as a psychotherapist is to create a safe and supportive environment in which people can learn and share more about themselves, and in so doing, ease their suffering and create possibilities of positive movement and change in their lives. I am grounded in a relational and psychodynamic approach. This means that I am attuned to building a respectful interactive relationship, and that I bring an awareness of the deep impact of the past on people's present lives. My practice is diverse, with a specialization in trauma focused psychotherapy. Other areas of expertise are the treatment of depression, grief and loss, anxiety, relational issues, emotional regulation, and difficulties with family of origin.
