Therapists for college students near University of Pittsburgh
Hi! I'm Heather, and I work with trauma survivors, high achievers, and people with lots of anxiety. While I work with all kinds of trauma, my most significant experience is at the intersections of religious trauma and LGBTQ+ identities, and/or high intelligence. I like working with people who want to understand why they do the things they do, or who already know but can't seem to stop doing them.
I enjoy working with college students who are struggling with life transitions in some way-- whether it is experiencing anxiety about being away from home, academic studies, or relationships. Together we can help you to manage anxieties, learn new coping skills, and to process and work through difficult situations. I particularly enjoy working with neurodiverse folks, and have experience helping those who have ADHD or autistic brain styles. Please feel free to reach out and let me know how I might best help you!
I have more than 12 years of experience in the field of counseling. I have had the privilege of working with people from many backgrounds and life experiences, including those with a history of mental health illnesses or conditions and co-occurring disorders. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I desire to work with people to help them find their own potential, and to pursue their goals in life. By nature, I use a holistic approach to therapy for the clients I work with which allows me to learn who my clients are as people before working with them to develop a personalized health plan based on their values, needs, and goals. This has been a valuable approach for me as a therapist over the years.
*Update 3.26.20: “Social distancing” need not interrupt or delay therapy. Many therapists (including myself) are providing telepsych (remote/distance) sessions via phone or video-call during this uncertain and surreal time. Many of us (including myself) have also lowered our student rates. You don’t need to hire me, but if you’re struggling, please connect with *somebody*. Now back to my regularly scheduled profile;) Hi! So, you’re checking out therapist profiles and considering therapy. Good move. Sometimes, talking with friends and family just isn’t enough. Maybe your mood, anxiety, relationships, use, or self- harm has gotten worse? I’m sorry you’re struggling - though you came to the right place. Really. Therapy can help you feel less overwhelmed and less stuck; break self-destructive relationship patterns and behaviors; take better care of yourself; get substance use under better control; and .... really, anything *you* want to address. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with adolescents and young adults struggling with school, relationships, ADHD, grief, anxiety, depression, self-injury, substance use, and most anything else you can imagine. I am passionate about my work - most especially my work with your age group. My niece dubbed me a “teenaged grownup”. I didn’t argue:) Here are some “reviews” by real clients: *easy to talk to and approachable *Understands the student experience and WCU culture * she gets what it’s like to be my age in the 2000s * She’s pretty funny sometimes * she treats me like a real person *very accepting and non-judgmental; I can talk with her about super sensitive stuff. *She cares. I trust her. You can learn more about me and my practice on my website. If we decide to work together, know this: I am honest, sincere, and direct. I will never impose my agenda or beliefs on you. I want to help you become the best version of yourself. You needn’t see *me* But, if you’re struggling, please try at least a few sessions with *somebody* The best therapy takes place in a relationship in which you feel heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less. Best, Amy
I use client-first approach in my work. Whether you’re a young person feeling overwhelmed, a couple looking to reconnect, or an individual working toward body acceptance, I see you. In therapy, I blend kindness, humor, and warmth to create a space where you can feel heard. Together, we’ll build tools to manage anxiety, depression, and change— finding light even in some of our toughest moments.

You can usually manage the anxiety, but lately it feels out of control. You realize you can’t handle this alone. You need help. Maybe this sounds familiar? - Times where you feel like you can’t breathe, your heart is pounding out of your chest and you feel desperate. - You can't sleep through the night - You can’t concentrate and it’s affecting school or work - You can’t ever relax. Your body is tense and frequently in pain. **Counseling can provide relief and tools to help you feel calm and more in control.

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you do, it never feels like enough? Maybe your mind keeps running through everything you haven’t finished, or you catch yourself worrying about details long after everyone else has moved on. It might feel like you’re juggling so much and still not measuring up, even when you’re giving it your all. Over time, that constant pressure can feel exhausting and leave you wondering if things will ever feel different. More than anything, you want life to feel lighter, calmer, and more manageable.I work with teens and adults navigating ADHD, OCD, and anxiety. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in a way that feels approachable and practical. In our sessions, we’ll practice strategies in real time so you can build confidence and take tools into daily life.

I provide comprehensive treatment for adults struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD and various other mental health conditions. Psychiatry is a unique field in medical practice and listening to our patients is the key to understanding their needs. We aim to understand you, not just medicate you. The primary focus is on adults between the ages of 20 and 60 who are motivated to make healthy changes in their life, to learn about their condition and to grow in the process. Although medications do play a central role sessions often involve a deeper exploration of the patient's life issues that may be playing a key role. The focus is patient centered mental health. Several conditions are beyond the scope of our practice. Patients with eating disorders, psychosis, body image distortions, gender dysphoria and substance use issues are often referred to more specialized centers. Parenting or custody evaluations are also outsourced as are disability evaluations. I do not participate with any third party insurance carriers. Payment for appointments is expected at the session. The 90 min evaluation is $250, follow-ups are $150. Most forms of payment are accepted. The frequency of appointments varies depending on the complexity of the presentation and patient needs.
I have clients from a variety of backgrounds and demographics. A large portion of my caseload are students, especially students who are currently in graduate programs. Opening up is no small thing, but it's also the fundamental thing that gives folks relief. To this end, I try to make therapy a natural process and most of my clients say that I feel like "talking to a real person." I developed my style by working with university students on a number of campuses who taught me to drop the artificial formalities, ask deeper questions, be upfront with my care, and say what I mean. In general, I start from the standpoint that anyone seeking therapy has come by their pain honestly and that much of what folx find distressing in themselves is a reasonable response to what has happened to them. Thus, I am unlikely to give rote advice and more likely to partner with you in unpacking your past, exploring your feelings, reaching creative solutions, and lifting what's blocking you from moving toward your version of the good life. In terms of specialties, I help students work through the kinds of relationship troubles (family, romantic, friendships etc) that leave people feeling lonely, anxious, inadequate, seeking approval, depressed, misunderstood, self-critical, or slow to let others in. Queer folx, Student Veterans, adult children of alcoholics, overachievers, burnt out students, undergrad, law, medical, and grad students, young professionals, and folks in creative fields have found me helpful. Importantly, for therapy to be a liberating space, people need the freedom to talk about how their lives are shaped by their sociocultural identities as well as corresponding experiences of prejudice, marginalization, and erasure. Conversations about politics, class, race, religion, gender, sexuality and all the "isms" are fair game and also integral to figuring out how to live with more ease in these difficult times.
