The client-therapist relationship is one of the most important factors in determining client outcomes. Establishing a safe-space and trusting relationship allows us to explore your experiences and offer new perspectives that can promote healing and personal growth. My core theoretical orientation in graduate school was humanistic-existential, though I have also received extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), particularly Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and CBT for Insomnia. I am also proficient in the provision of two trauma-focused, evidence-based treatments: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE). In therapy, I often utilize mindfulness and introduce skills related to acceptance as well as change. My approach to treatment is eclectic and largely dependent on the individual client. I adapt my approach to ‘meet you where you are at.’ After learning what you hope to get out of treatment and what aspects of your life you may be struggling with, we collaborate to come up with a treatment plan that can guide the therapeutic journey and help you reach your goals. I believe that anxiety does not have to control your life! I have specialized experience helping those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, and phobias. My favorite treatment methods to use with clients include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT-informed therapy, Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP), and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC). Above all, I strive to use all of the clinical skills I have to best meet my clients’ unique needs.
Life sucks. Sometimes you need someone to help it feel less sucky. Other times, you just need someone to agree with you. Life is about balancing acceptance and change, and my therapy reflects that. My favorite therapies that I’ve seen change not only my clients’ lives, but also my life, include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and exposure therapy (ERP). But ultimately, I think the best therapy is being accepted for who you are. My expertise is in treating issues that result from anxiety (generalized anxiety, phobias, OCD, and everything in between), pregnancy (from infertility to postpartum to grieving due to miscarriage or abortion), and trauma (which not only includes PTSD, but also complex-PTSD/borderline personality disorder and identity-based trauma). However, YOU are the expert of your life. I’ll work with you to create a therapy plan in the direction YOU want your life to go. Overall, I combine my extensive training in evidence-based treatments with creating a space that highlights your strengths, is trauma-informed, and is also anti-oppressive.

Really, sports can be a great metaphor for life. They have the power to be more than just a game, a match, a meet, or an event; they are able to teach us things we never thought we needed to know. We often learn and grow through the games we love. As players in the game of life, we often get hit with curve balls. We can suffer from lows and rejoice in the highs. There are elements of the game we can control and others that we just have to be present for and ride out for a while. I believe in a collaborative and strengths-based approach to therapy because no one knows you better than yourself. My goal is to empower each client to draw on their strengths in order to navigate through the challenges one may face in the game of life. I strive to foster a holistic environment in an effort to see challenges from all angles. Often, what affects us “off the field” translates to the work we do on it.
One of my favorite quotes, “Change your thoughts and you can change your world” by Norman Vincent Peale, really inspires me to help clients realize hope for the future. The change comes from you, and we can start that process within the therapy room. Each person is unique in their own way, and because of this, they may need a unique approach to therapy. I look at the therapeutic relationship as a team: we can collaborate together to work on any issues that may be troublesome. You are the expert on your life, and I am here to help you navigate that life by providing a non-judgmental space, helping you to create change from within. I view therapy through a person-centered lens while using interventions pulled from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and solution-focused therapy (SFBT). Another big part of my practice is using Art Therapy to encourage clients to feel comfortable and able to express themselves on many levels. Hello, My name is Dalyn Pacheco-Smith. I received my degrees from University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and University of San Francisco. At the University of San Francisco, I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology with a focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Marriage and Family Therapy. Devon Kardel is a current doctoral level clinical psychology student at the Michigan School of Psychology and obtained her Masters in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Devon also has a brain injury specialization and has worked with individuals who have experienced trauma and have traumatic brain injuries for seven years. She also has experience with couples and relationships, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, and is familiar with a variety of stressors through her previous positions in hospitals and private practice. Through various types of therapeutic modalities, Devon uses her clinical health specialty to utilize the mind/body connection and help you heal in the most integrative way possible.
