Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
I work with adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or not quite like themselves, often dealing with anxiety, low mood, or a lack of motivation. Many of the people I work with are navigating new life transitions, health concerns, relationship challenges, or stress related to work or school. My style is warm and collaborative, meeting you where you are and working alongside you. I take a holistic approach to therapy, getting to know you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms. We’ll explore how things like emotions, relationships, physical health, sleep, and daily stressors all interact to affect your wellbeing. I draw on cognitive, behavioral, motivational, and mindfulness-based strategies. Together, we’ll get to the root of what’s contributing to how you’re feeling, build skills you can use in your everyday life, develop healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions, and take small, consistent steps toward what matters most to you. It takes courage to reach out, and wherever you’re starting from, you’re welcome here. Therapy with me is a space where you can feel supported, understood, and accepted, while also working toward where you want to be. If you’re feeling stuck, we can work through it together.
I am providing virtual therapy for those struggling with issues of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, body image and body dysmorphia, stress, perfectionism, grief and loss, and life transitions. I provide a safe space to work together to overcome your life stressors and develop healthy and positive ways to cope.
College and young adult years can be both exciting and overwhelming. Many students and young adults find themselves managing anxiety, depression, or grief while also trying to keep up with academic demands, relationships, work, and expectations from family or themselves. Feeling stressed, burned out, unmotivated, or emotionally drained does not mean you are failing — it means you are human and navigating a lot at once. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. I work with college students, young adults, and adolescents using a client-centered, goal-oriented approach. Therapy is a collaborative process where we focus on what feels most pressing for you and develop practical strategies to help you cope more effectively with stress, emotions, and life transitions. I support individuals experiencing: * Anxiety and depression related to academic pressure, performance stress, and major life changes * Grief and loss, including losses that occur during college or early adulthood * Emotional overwhelm, burnout, difficulty with focus, and feeling “stuck” or disconnected * Relationship and family stress, especially as roles, independence, and boundaries shift * Autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and behavioral concerns in adolescents and young adults I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and stress-reduction techniques to help clients build coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and gain clarity during challenging seasons. Therapy should feel supportive, nonjudgmental, and empowering. Whether this is your first time seeking counseling or you are returning to therapy, my goal is to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and supported as you work toward balance, confidence, and improved well-being.

Welcome! Transitions are rarely as "seamless" as they look on social media. Whether you are a first-generation college student navigating a system that wasn’t built for you, or a member of the LGBTQIA+ community looking for a truly affirming space to land, I am here to support you. Why work with me? As a therapist with lived experience as both a first-gen graduate and a member of the queer community, I understand the "double-lens" many students carry. You won't have to spend your sessions educating me on the stakes of a "B-" grade when your family is counting on you, or explaining why coming out feels different when your campus and home life collide. I provide a space where you don't have to "code-switch" or pick one part of your identity over the other. In our work together, we will: Navigate "The First-Gen Weight": Unpack the imposter syndrome and achievement guilt that often come with being the first in your family to pursue a degree. Explore Identity with Ease: Provide a grounded, queer-affirming environment where your identity is celebrated, not just "tolerated." Build a "Chosen Home": Move past just "surviving" the semester and start building an internal sense of safety and belonging. College is a massive life shift—a pressure cooker for anxiety and depression. You don't have to figure it out alone. My clients are often high-achieving students who feel like 'outsiders' in academic spaces. They are looking for a therapist who 'gets it'—someone who understands the intersection of cultural expectations, queer identity, and the unique pressures of the first-generation experience. I know that taking the first step can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve been taught to 'just push through' or if you’re worried about whether this space is truly for you. My approach is informed by years of experience "on the inside" as a public school teacher and guidance counselor. I’ve seen firsthand how the educational system can both support and fail students, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. This means I don’t just offer emotional support; I understand the actual logistics of academic burnout, the maze of campus resources, and the specific exhaustion of being a student in today's world. You don't need to have it all figured out before we talk. Whether you have a specific goal or just a heavy feeling you can't quite name, you are welcome here. I offer a free, 15-minute consultation call so we can see if we’re a good match—no pressure, just a chance to connect. Check out my website and click CONTACT ME to send me a brief message. I usually respond within 24–48 hours, and we can take it one small step at a time from there. Smiles:) Melissa Rappaport, MA, LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)

The Journey to Your Internal Compass Starts with One Step. We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. It takes courage to seek help for personal struggles. Therapy is like having a compass. The compass provides a sense of safety for travelers as they know they can rely on it to always point them in the right direction. With a compass—any compass—we can always pause for a moment in time and take stock of where we are so that we can continue to grow and change. All of us must change course from time to time because what we are doing isn’t working. If you are struggling with addiction, alcoholism, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or trauma, allow me the honor to walk alongside you as you take the steps to the authentic you and discover your internal compass. I use evidence-based treatments tailored to individual needs to help clients attain and maintain long-term sobriety, improve relationships and well-being. I offer a safe and confidential environment on telehealth software. Healing happens within relationships and it's crucial you find a therapist you connect with. Call or email me today. Life can be challenging at times. Sometimes the guidance of a professional can provide you the clarity needed to help you move forward. I work with individuals seeking treatment for depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance use, codependency and life transitions as well as with families wanting to improve their relationship with one another. I have 25 years of experience working with families, specifically those dealing with estrangement, substance use and mood disorders. My theoretical framework is grounded in structural and internal family systems, lifespan development and attachment theory; interventions I use are framed within the context of feminist and gender theory. I work best with students who carry a lot internally—people who seem put-together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected underneath. Many of the students I support are high achievers or deep feelers who worry about disappointing others, overthink decisions, or feel pressure to be “the strong one.” They’re often juggling school, relationships, family expectations, cultural or religious pressure, and their own inner world all at the same time. A lot of the students I connect with are navigating big transitions—figuring out who they are, questioning beliefs they grew up with, or trying to become their own person in the midst of complicated family dynamics. Some grew up in high-pressure homes, were the emotional caretaker in their family, or learned to hide their needs. Others are noticing patterns they don’t know how to change, like shutting down, feeling numb, feeling “too much,” or carrying stress in their bodies through tension, trouble sleeping, or difficulty concentrating. Many of my students are the quiet strugglers—the ones who rarely ask for help, apologize for having needs, or carry the emotional load for everyone else. They’re thoughtful, self-aware, and resilient, but exhausted. If you feel stuck between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming, or if you’re looking for a space where you don’t have to hold everything together, you’ll feel understood with me.
I am inspired when I see college-age men and women who are searching for emotional, financial, and intellectual independence. College can be a challenging time of finding identity and intimacy and I assist by helping clarify college relationships. Having gone to college and raising four children, I understand many things about the stages of early adulthood. I offer a safe space to process different parts that may be confusing in order to safely integrate all facets of personality and enhance congruence, agency, and personal power, enabling young adults to grow up healthy, more swiftly than struggling on their own.
